Usage of Umbilical Cord Clamps
1. Sterilization: Ensure the clamp is sterile before use to prevent infection.
2. Application Timing: Apply the clamp within 1-3 minutes after birth (delayed cord clamping may be recommended in some cases).
3. Positioning: Place the clamp about 2-3 cm from the baby's abdomen.
4. Securing: Close the clamp firmly to stop blood flow but avoid excessive pressure that could damage the cord.
5. Cutting the Cord: Use sterile scissors to cut the cord distal to the clamp (away from the baby).
Precautions
1.Avoid Premature Clamping: Delayed clamping (waiting 30-60 seconds) is often recommended for better neonatal outcomes unless immediate resuscitation is needed.
2.Check for Bleeding: Ensure the clamp is secure to prevent hemorrhage.
3.Monitor for Infection: Watch for signs of infection (redness, swelling, foul odor) at the cord stump.
4.Proper Removal: The clamp is typically removed after 24-48 hours once the cord is dried and sealed.
5.Single Use Only: Never reuse clamps to prevent cross-contamination.
When to Seek Medical Help
- Persistent bleeding from the cord.
- Signs of infection (pus, redness, fever).
- The clamp becomes loose or falls off prematurely.
